NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?
Derek Mikulski (DM): No, fitness was not always a part of my life. I was very overweight until the age of 18 when I when was tired of being heavy and decided to commit to a healthier lifestyle. I lost 80 pounds over the course of 18 months, and this experience led me to pursue a career in fitness where I could help others achieve similar results.
NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?
DM: Almonds, bananas, gluten, dairy and soy-free protein bars, and steamed broccoli are some of my favorite healthy snacks.
NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?
DM: Most people overlook the mental component of fitness (or the pursuit of any goal, for that matter). I work hard to put myself into a primed mental state every day that helps me stay focused and motivated to achieve goals related to my health and career. This includes daily meditation, visualization, and incantations that reaffirm success and make it a real, genuine desire.
NMF: How do you change your body? What are your fitness favorites?
DM: I change my body through a combination of diet, exercise, mental training and goal setting that together create an environment that allows me to stay focused, dedicated, and making continuous progress. ActivMotion Bars are a key part of my personal training routine, as they provide wonderful mind-body training benefits unlike any other fitness tool in existence. The dynamic shifting resistance inside the AMBs provide feedback to your body that you can feel and hear, making for an innovative and engaging training experience that truly improves functional fitness.
