Jessica James is a yoga alliance certified teacher, having practiced yoga for over 12 years, with a celebrity clientele that includes Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale and Perez Hilton.  Continue reading to learn more about Jessica and how she trained her mind and body at 8 months pregnant in her We Heart Yoga: Prenatal Flow DVD and her everyday life. 

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

JJ: Yoga became a major part of my life in my early twenties. I started practicing when I was trying to lose some weight, then I got hooked. It became a necessity for sanity trying to hustle as a young girl in Los Angeles. It kept my body together too so that was a plus!

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

JJ: I start every morning with a giant glass of water with lemon then follow up with a green smoothie. It starts my day off right so if I go askew later in the day, I know I will be back on track tomorrow.

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

JJ: Yoga every morning! The meditation aspect and the daily discipline of getting to a class keep my mind from spinning out and getting distracted. The intense focus on my daily physical practice allows my mind to break patterns of thought and build mental control.  

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

JJ: I change my body constantly through yoga by going toward physical challenge and breathing through it. I approach my edge, take a few breaths then push my edge for a breath, back off and repeat over and over until my edge moves.  Right now, my fitness favorite is alignment focused yoga. It is teaching my how to stack my bones, lift out of my joints and move with awareness. It is a challenge to slow down and go into the places I would rather avoid but the transformation it is bringing to my body is worth it.
